2025–present — Re-launching in Kenya
The pivot is real — and the first engineers are next.
The 2022–2025 Kenya campaign stalled on a hard truth: Opplet had to become a marketable product to attract users, and at that pace, Gary realized, it had no chance of launching in his lifetime.
So he proposed that Natalia switch to personal cloud development — a way to stay meaningfully engaged with the technology while the main effort paused. Opplet stayed online, but its development stopped completely.
To avoid disturbing the live platform, the two set up a separate server and installed HestiaCP, NextCloud, and a handful of other apps for personal use. It was, in effect, a prototype for what is now Opplet Den.
Until then, sovereignty had meant the infrastructure the training ran on. Den moved it to a different scale: private mail, calendars, files — computation a single person could own and answer to no one else for. In retreating from the project to the personal, the team uncovered a second thing Opplet could be. It carried that back. Opplet was no longer only a place to practice on sovereign infrastructure; it was sovereign infrastructure you could clone and run as your own — the value now offered through the deploy door.
To define Den’s tools and design, the team started leaning on AI chatbots. And that was the turn: Natalia and Gary realized AI could reshape not just their personal setup, but the development of Opplet itself.
The rebuild followed quickly. Gary reworked Opplet’s architecture, settling its zone topology and hardware requirements. Natalia intensified the back-end build. Kevin now contributes in a consulting role. Onboarding has been sharpened around a single transition: turning an interested newcomer into an apprentice. Proper marketing materials — including this very website — have finally appeared. Still unfinished, this stage has already produced more than the twelve-plus years before it.
By August 2026, the team expects to begin recruiting founding engineers — the first cohort the project can finally employ for real, the aim it has carried since Ukraine.
